80+ Kenyans Evacuated After South Africa Xenophobic Attacks

The Kenyan government has evacuated over 80 citizens from South Africa following a wave of xenophobic attacks linked to an unofficial June 30, 2026 anti-immigrant deadline issued by civilian groups.

Specifically, the returnees were received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where government officials debriefed them, offered psychosocial support and reunited them with their families.

Why Kenyans Were Fleeing South Africa

The evacuations follow a mass exodus of foreign nationals across South Africa. Specifically, civic movements including Operation Dudula and March and March had demanded all undocumented immigrants leave the country by June 30 or face citizen-led action.

Furthermore, past anti-immigrant protests in Durban, Johannesburg and Tshwane have previously escalated into property damage and deadly violence.

How the Government Responded

Kenya moved swiftly to protect its nationals. Specifically, authorities organised evacuation flights and received returnees at JKIA with a structured support framework.

Furthermore, psychosocial counselling was made available to help returnees process the trauma of displacement and violence. Additionally, families received their loved ones at the airport in emotional reunions.

What Comes Next

The government must now address the longer-term welfare of those evacuated. Specifically, reintegration support and economic assistance will be critical for Kenyans who lost businesses and livelihoods in South Africa.
