Police arrested five suspects and seized more than 582 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis in a coordinated cannabis crackdown. The operations covered Kisumu, Kisii and Nairobi, with officers also recovering 1,002 rolls of suspected bhang.

The multi-agency teams included officers from NACADA, the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, Regional Drug Unit and K-9 Unit. Police said they had secured the exhibits and documented the scenes as the suspects awaited arraignment.

Cannabis crackdown nets 282.55kg in Kisumu

In Kisumu, officers intercepted a saloon car at Kisumu Boys Roundabout during an intelligence-led operation. The team brought together officers from NANIB Busia, NANIB Nyanza and DCI Kisumu.

Police said the driver ignored orders to stop, prompting an officer to fire at the front left tyre. The shot forced the vehicle to halt, but the driver escaped during the commotion.

However, officers arrested a 21-year-old woman travelling as the co-driver as she attempted to flee. A search uncovered 282.55 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis in seven Manila sacks and loose quantities inside the vehicle.

Police valued the consignment at KSh8.65 million. Officers also recovered 40 dozen packets of suspected uncustomed Supermatch cigarettes, worth an estimated KSh40,000.

House raids in Kisii and Nairobi

Meanwhile, officers in Kisii acted on a tip-off from a member of the public. They raided a house at Keumbu Trading Centre and recovered seven sacks containing approximately 300 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis.

The team also arrested a 32-year-old suspect during the operation. The Kisii recovery accounted for the larger share of the combined weight seized in the two counties.

In Nairobi, a multi-agency team led by the Jogoo Road Officer Commanding Station searched a two-bedroom house. The property was in Jericho Estate, within Buruburu Sub-County.

During the search, officers recovered 1,002 rolls of suspected bhang, comprising 936 brown rolls and 66 red rolls. Police put their estimated street value at KSh5,750.

Officers arrested three suspects in the Nairobi operation and detained them at Jogoo Road Police Station. All five suspects remained in custody pending arraignment.
