Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has explained why ordinary people should participate in his company’s Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Dangote made the remarks during an interview after an interviewer questioned why he needed an IPO despite his huge personal wealth.

The interviewer suggested Dangote could use his own money to fund his projects instead. However, Dangote said the IPO was not simply about raising money. He said it was about giving ordinary people a chance to own part of the business.

Dangote Mentions Drivers and Cooks

Dangote specifically mentioned workers and families who could benefit from the share offering. He said the IPO would allow people such as his driver and cook to “have a piece of the action.”

He also mentioned the interviewer’s driver, cook, wife and children. The remarks quickly attracted attention online, with many viewers focusing on Dangote’s response to the journalist’s question.

Dangote Refinery IPO Opens Public Investment

The comments come as Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals offers shares to the public. The IPO involves 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 each.

Investors can subscribe for a minimum of 10 shares, costing ₦5,250. Dangote has described the offer as an “IPO for the people.” He has said the structure aims to give ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to become shareholders.

Reuters reported that the offering could raise about $1.6 billion and represents Africa’s largest IPO.

Dangote’s Message on Wealth Creation

Dangote’s comments have shifted attention from fundraising to public ownership. Through the IPO, members of the public can buy shares and potentially benefit from the company’s future performance.

However, buying shares also carries investment risks. Investors can lose money if the value of their shares falls. The IPO has nevertheless sparked fresh conversations about ordinary Africans participating in major businesses and building wealth through investments.
