Kalonzo Musyoka has called for accountability following the building collapse in Eastleigh.
The Wiper leader urges authorities to investigate construction approvals and inspections as emergency teams search for people reported trapped.
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has called for accountability following the Eastleigh building collapse in Nairobi. He urged authorities to identify those responsible, regardless of their positions or connections.
The incomplete multi-storey building collapsed in a densely populated neighbourhood, raising concerns about construction safety. In a statement issued on Friday, Kalonzo said rescue teams were still searching for people reported trapped beneath the rubble.
The former Vice President expressed support for affected families and wished the injured a quick recovery. He also called for urgent cooperation among agencies working to reach those still trapped.
Eastleigh building collapse raises approval questions
Beyond the rescue effort, Kalonzo sought a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse. He said the public deserved clear answers about how authorities approved and inspected the structure.
The inquiry should also establish how builders constructed a project of that size in a crowded neighbourhood. Kalonzo called for scrutiny of everyone involved in approvals, inspections and construction, including anyone who ignored safety concerns.
He stressed that official positions or personal connections should not shield anyone found responsible from accountability. However, his statement did not establish who caused the collapse or identify specific failures investigators had confirmed.
Kalonzo also warned that corruption and weak enforcement of construction laws put public safety at risk. He argued that Kenyans should not continue losing their lives in preventable building disasters.
Rescue teams urged to coordinate response
Meanwhile, Kalonzo praised the Kenya Red Cross and the Kenya Defence Forces Disaster Response Battalion for their rescue efforts. He also commended the National Disaster Management Unit, Nairobi County emergency teams and members of the public who helped.
Because reaching trapped people remained urgent, he asked all agencies to coordinate their operations without delay. At the same time, he urged members of the public to follow first responders’ instructions.
Authorities and emergency teams continued search and rescue operations amid concerns about people reported missing after the collapse. Kalonzo offered support to families awaiting news and prayed that rescuers would reach those trapped in time.
He also called for comfort for affected families and strength for emergency personnel working to save lives.
