The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of rain and flash flood risks in Nairobi and other counties.
Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts the heaviest downpours from October 26 to 28 and urges residents to watch for flash floods.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall, flash floods and strong winds in Nairobi and dozens of other counties. The heaviest downpours are expected between October 26 and 28.
In its October 23 advisory, the department forecast rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours in several regions. The rainfall alert covers October 24 to 28, with intensity expected to ease by October 30.
Heavy rainfall forecast across several regions
The forecast covers parts of the Coast, Northeastern region and the highlands west and east of the Rift Valley. It also includes the Central Highlands and Southeastern Lowlands.
Parts of Nairobi are among the areas likely to receive rain. Other counties include Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Kisumu and Nakuru.
The department also listed Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, Meru and Nyeri among the affected counties.
Flash floods may reach areas without heavy rain
Residents should remain alert for potential flash floods and poor visibility, the department said. It also warned that floodwaters can reach downstream areas even where no heavy rain has fallen.
During storms, residents should avoid sheltering under trees or staying near grilled windows because of lightning risks.
Strong winds and high waves expected
Alongside the rain, the department forecast gusty winds across coastal, eastern and northern regions. Southerly to southeasterly winds could exceed 25 knots in those areas.
Meanwhile, ocean waves could exceed two metres on October 25. The department therefore urged people involved in maritime activities to exercise caution.
Although rainfall intensity should reduce by October 30, the department said it would issue further updates if conditions change.
