David Maraga Launches Citizen-Funded 2027 Presidential Campaign

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has asked Kenyans to fund his 2027 presidential campaign through public contributions. Consequently, he aims to ensure transparency, promote accountability, and foster citizen ownership of leadership.

As of March 2026, ordinary Kenyans have contributed about KSh 7.8 million, supporting his nationwide “Ukatiba Caravan” initiative.

Citizen-Funded Model Gains Momentum
Maraga runs under the United Green Movement party, emphasizing a citizen-funded model. Moreover, he refuses reliance on wealthy political financiers and elite networks.

Additionally, he has contributed between KSh 1 million and KSh 2 million personally, highlighting that ordinary citizens, not political tycoons, should drive the campaign.

Transparency and Use of Campaign Funds
Importantly, Maraga promises full transparency regarding campaign finances. He plans to disclose the complete budget and funding details publicly. The contributions support three key activities.

  • First, they fund the “Ukatiba Caravan,” which has reached 27 counties so far.
  • Second, they finance civic education and voter registration, targeting young Kenyans nationwide.
  • Third, the funds cover logistics, including town hall meetings and digital outreach programs, increasing citizen engagement across counties.UGM

How Kenyans Can Contribute
Supporters can donate through Maraga’s official website or M-Pesa Paybill number 4164137. Furthermore, donations start from KSh 50, encouraging wide participation from all income levels.

A People-Powered Political Campaign
Ultimately, Maraga’s campaign reflects a shift toward citizen-driven politics in Kenya. Therefore, his approach empowers ordinary Kenyans to influence leadership and governance directly.

Consequently, this model could reshape campaign financing ahead of the 2027 elections.
