The DCP leader urges Mt Kenya voters to back one presidential candidate, warning that divisions could undermine efforts to defeat President William Ruto.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has suggested a permanent move to US with his family if the Opposition loses the 2027 election. He linked that possibility to whether Mt Kenya voters unite behind efforts to unseat President William Ruto.

Speaking during a Sunday night interview with a vernacular television station, Gachagua expressed confidence in an Opposition victory. However, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader warned that internal rivalries could give Ruto an advantage.

Gachagua urges unity behind one candidate

Gachagua argued that the Opposition already had enough political support to defeat the President in 2027. But he said its leaders must resist efforts to divide their supporters if they want to win.

He also urged Mt Kenya voters to reject competing political interests and rally behind one presidential candidate. His warning tied his willingness to remain in Kenya to the region’s response to those appeals.

The former Deputy President maintained that he had worked to bring the region’s political leadership together. Consequently, he said he would not accept blame if voters ignored his calls and split their support among rival camps.

Move to US could precede election

Meanwhile, Gachagua indicated that he could leave even before Kenyans vote in the 2027 General Election. He said that option would arise if he concluded that regional leaders were misleading voters and frustrating unity efforts.

He said he already had a home in the United States and could relocate there with his family. The remarks came weeks after his return from an extended American visit lasting nearly two months.

Gachagua left Kenya on August 26 and returned quietly on October 20. During the trip, he reportedly met Kenyans living abroad and spent time at his American residence.

He is now seeking to consolidate his regional influence and secure support for a common Opposition candidate. Meanwhile, political parties are working towards an alternative coalition to challenge Ruto in 2027.
