The new tool lets users describe a person or object they want obscured, applying pixelation while leaving the rest of the photograph intact.

Instagram has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered Pixel effect that lets users obscure people or objects in photographs before sharing them through Stories. The feature offers a way to conceal someone’s identity without changing the rest of the image.

Rather than applying an effect across an entire photograph, users can enter a text prompt specifying what they want hidden. The tool can then heavily pixelate the selected person while preserving the surrounding scene.

The addition gives Instagram’s AI image-editing tools a practical use alongside their creative functions: helping users share photographs without revealing everyone who appears in them.

How to use the Pixel effect

To access the feature, users open Instagram, start a new Story and select the photograph they want to post. They can then go to the editing options, open the AI effects and choose Pixel.

The next step is to enter an instruction describing the desired edit. For example, a user can ask the AI to make a person in the photograph extremely pixelated. The instruction tells the tool what to obscure and the appearance the user wants.

Users can preview the edited photograph before sharing it as a Story. This lets them see the result of the prompt before the image is posted.

A tool for concealing identities

The Pixel effect is intended for photographs containing people whose identities a user does not want to reveal. That could include someone in the background of an event or an individual who has not agreed to have their face displayed publicly.

Its ability to target a person or object means the original setting can remain visible. The main change is concentrated on the part of the photograph identified in the user’s instruction, rather than the image as a whole.

That distinguishes the feature’s purpose from effects used mainly to change a photograph’s style. Here, the AI edit is directed towards obscuring selected details before publication.

Part of Meta’s wider AI rollout

In July, Meta announced more than 30 AI-powered effects for Instagram Stories using its Muse Image model. The company said those effects would let users transform photographs with a single tap and allow creators to develop and share effects of their own.

Meta’s demonstrations included altering elements within photographs and generating visual effects from text instructions. The Pixel effect adds an identity-concealing option to that broader set of editing capabilities.

Meta describes Muse Image as an image-generation and editing model built to respond to conversational prompts. Its integration into the company’s products forms part of an expansion of AI-assisted creation, with Instagram users increasingly able to request image changes through simple written instructions.
