KMPDU has given 17 counties 21 days to implement agreed doctors’ salary adjustments.
The doctors’ union says members in 17 counties will stop work on November 25, 2026, unless county governments implement agreed salary adjustments.
A KMPDU strike notice has given 17 county governments 21 days to implement agreed salary adjustments for doctors. The union warned that members would stop work from November 25, 2026, unless the changes appear in their payslips.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union announced the ultimatum in a statement on November 4. It accused the counties of failing to honour existing commitments rather than address new pay demands.
According to the union, a Return-to-Work Formula, a court order and a subsequent addendum underpin the salary adjustments. KMPDU therefore wants full and unconditional implementation, rather than fresh negotiations over commitments already reached with doctors.
Counties facing the KMPDU strike notice
The affected counties are Murang’a, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Lamu, Taita-Taveta, Tana River, Machakos, Makueni, Laikipia, Narok, Kajiado, Embu, Isiolo, Meru and Vihiga.
Meanwhile, KMPDU said 30 county governments had already implemented the adjustments. It argued that the remaining 17 had no justification for further delays.
The union also maintained that the affected governments had received the necessary directive and funds. They had a three-month grace period to make the changes, it added, but had yet to comply.
Unless the counties reflect the outstanding adjustments in doctors’ payslips within the notice period, members will withdraw their services. The threatened stoppage could consequently disrupt care for patients who depend on public hospitals and other county-run health facilities.
