KNEC directs colleges to register eligible diploma teacher trainees for assessments running from January 18 to February 12, 2027.

Registration for KNEC supplementary assessments will close on December 15, 2026, the Kenya National Examinations Council has announced. The exercise opens on November 9 for eligible diploma teacher trainees who failed earlier examinations or missed specified assessments.

In a circular to teacher training college principals, KNEC scheduled the assessments for January 18 to February 12, 2027. The council will provide individual timetables after registration ends.

Who qualifies for KNEC supplementary assessments?

The resit category covers trainees pursuing the Diploma in Primary Education (DPTE) and Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education (DSTE). It also includes those taking the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE).

However, KNEC restricted eligibility under this category to trainees referred in previous assessments. The opportunity therefore targets candidates who need to complete outstanding assessment requirements.

Meanwhile, trainees who missed their July 2026 Year One and Year Two College Based Assessments can take the outstanding papers. This category covers DSTE candidates and those pursuing the Diploma in Teacher Education for Pre-Primary and Primary (DTE PP&P).

Candidates must undertake both College Based and Summative Assessments in line with their respective timetables.

Fees, registration arrangements and graduation plans

Each trainee must pay Ksh7,200 in assessment fees through eCitizen. Those referred in practicum must also pay an additional Ksh5,000.

Colleges with fewer than five candidates cannot operate as independent assessment centres. Instead, they must arrange registration through approved institutions with larger candidate numbers.

Principals must submit signed nominal rolls and proof of payment by December 30, 2026. They must also provide relevant medical reports for trainees living with disabilities.

The assessment schedule follows a formal appeal from the Kenya Teachers Colleges Principals Association. The association sought another opportunity for referred trainees to meet requirements for graduation scheduled for March 2027.

Meanwhile, the 2026 DSTE summative assessments are continuing across various subjects through KNEC’s online Teacher Education Assessment (TECBA) system. Those assessments began on October 26 and run until November 6.
