Interior PS Raymond Omollo addressed fishing communities at Uhendo beach in Bondo.
Interior PS Raymond Omollo says Kenya seeks a lasting solution through talks with Uganda and stronger Coast Guard patrols.
Kenya is engaging Uganda to improve Lake Victoria security and end harassment of fishermen, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has said. He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would pursue a lasting solution with the neighbouring country.
Omollo spoke at Uhendo beach in West Sakwa, Bondo sub-county, during a meeting with fishing communities. Fishermen from Usigu, Rarieda and Bondo attended, alongside regional officials and local legislators.
Coast Guard support for Lake Victoria security
Alongside the diplomatic effort, Omollo said the government was working to strengthen the Kenya Coast Guard Service. The aim is to improve patrols and prevent foreign intruders from entering Kenyan waters.
He said the government would seek enough funding to support the service’s security operations on the lake. The planned support forms part of efforts to address insecurity affecting fishing communities.
Omollo also highlighted President William Ruto’s administration’s investment in the region’s blue economy, including construction of nine fish landing sites. He cited support for fishermen through new fishing gear, training and life-support assistance.
Beyond the lake, he said, other infrastructure facilities would help complete the wider blue economy ecosystem.
MPs urge ODM to allow broader political engagement
Meanwhile, Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo and Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda used the meeting to address national politics. They urged the Orange Democratic Movement to give Ruto room to engage all communities.
Odhiambo argued that ODM’s push for an equal share of government would not work because it risked excluding other communities. He said the president should remain free to welcome additional partners to promote national unity.
The lawmakers’ appeal accompanied Omollo’s discussions with fishing communities about security and government investment around the lake. Nyanza Regional Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha and Siaya County Commissioner Norbert Komora also attended the gathering at Uhendo beach.
