DCI officers from Nairobi joined the search after five robbery with violence suspects overpowered officers during a late-night cell transfer.
Five suspects facing robbery with violence charges escaped from Limuru Police Station in Kiambu County after overpowering officers. A police report places the incident at around 11pm on November 4.
Following the escape, a team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi joined efforts to trace the suspects.
Limuru Police Station escape during cell transfer
The police report says officers opened the male cells to move 10 detainees into an inner room. However, a confrontation broke out shortly after the detainees left the cell, as suspects tried to get out.
As officers struggled to contain the group, they raised the alarm and called for reinforcements. Additional officers then responded to the distress calls to assist their colleagues at the station.
The fleeing suspects also reportedly attacked some of the officers who arrived to help. Five suspects escaped during the confrontation, prompting the search involving DCI personnel from Nairobi.
Separate escape from Embu police cells
The Kiambu incident follows another escape involving four detainees at Itabua Police Station in Embu County. Those suspects faced cases involving murder, robbery with violence and theft when they escaped on October 24.
In that case, a police report says the detainees allegedly dug an opening through their holding cell wall. They then left the facility without drawing the attention of officers on duty.
Officers discovered their disappearance the following morning during a routine inspection of the cells. They blew whistles to raise the alarm, prompting other personnel to search the station and surrounding areas. However, that search did not locate the four escapees.
