Police have arrested a 38-year-old Nairobi father in connection with his 13-year-old son’s death following an alleged assault. Owen Wanjala, a Grade 9 pupil at Star of Hope Junior Secondary School, died while receiving treatment at Olive Link Hospital in Lungalunga.
Sinai Slums Chairlady Beatrice Mwangi alerted police after the discovery of the boy’s body at the hospital, a police report states.
Nairobi father accused of striking son with metal pipe
Officers from Lungalunga Police Station and DCI Makadara detectives visited the scene to investigate the alleged assault. The police report alleges that the father struck Owen’s head with a metallic pipe in Sinai at about 4pm on October 31, 2026.
Afterwards, the teenager reportedly complained of a headache, but his family did not take him to hospital. His condition then worsened on November 2, prompting relatives to rush him to Olive Link Hospital at about 11am.
Owen later died during treatment. Police processed the scene and moved his body to City Mortuary, where a postmortem examination will establish the cause of death.
Two officers injured during arrest protests
Police subsequently took the suspect to Industrial Area Police Station, while DCI Makadara detectives took over investigations. Protests reportedly accompanied the arrest, and stones struck two officers, leaving both with injuries.
Police identified one injured officer as Corporal Lucy Kinyua, who sustained an injury to her left elbow. The other, Police Constable Kennedy Mundara Maina, suffered a bleeding head wound above his right eye.
Both officers went to Mareba Health Centre for treatment, and health workers discharged them in fair condition. Meanwhile, detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Owen’s death, with the suspect awaiting further police action.
