16 Storey Building Collapses in South C Estate
Panic as Structure Falls
A multi-storey building under construction collapsed on January 2 in Nairobi’s South C Shopping Centre area. Moreover, the incident sparked panic among residents and passersby.
Emergency Response Deployed
Emergency responders rushed to the scene immediately after the collapse. However, officials have not confirmed whether anyone was trapped or injured beneath the debris.
Area Covered in Dust
Thick dust and scattered debris filled the streets. Consequently, nearby residents and business owners fled in panic to safety.
Kenya Red Cross Statement
Kenya Red Cross confirmed a multi-agency team was deployed. Additionally, the team conducted search-and-rescue operations and secured the affected area.
Government Yet to Respond
At publishing time, county and national governments had not issued statements. Similarly, the National Construction Authority (NCA) remained silent on the incident’s cause.
Previous Warnings from NCA
Less than a month earlier, NCA warned residents about cracks in a 13-storey building along Peponi Road. Furthermore, the authority dispatched a quality assurance team to conduct compliance checks.
Rising Cases of Collapses
Incidents of collapsing buildings have been increasing in Nairobi. On July 31, 2025, a wall collapsed on Rhapta Road, injuring several workers.
Safety Concerns Raised
Reports indicated the Rhapta Road site lacked safety compliance measures. Earlier in February, a Parklands collapse claimed one life after a three-storey building fell.
The South C collapse highlights growing safety concerns in Nairobi’s construction sector. Ultimately, authorities face pressure to enforce stricter compliance and protect residents.
