Traffic Officers Arrested in EACC Anti-Corruption Sweep
Officers Nabbed in Separate Operations
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two traffic officers in Mombasa and Murang’a County. Moreover, the arrests followed multiple public complaints about rampant bribery by traffic officers.
Murang’a Officer Arrested
The first officer, attached to Murang’a traffic base, was nabbed along the Kenol–Murang’a Road. Additionally, EACC officers recovered Ksh6,450 in small denominations believed to have been collected within two hours.
Processing and Bail
The suspect was escorted to the EACC Central Regional Offices for processing. Consequently, he was later booked at Nyeri Police Station and released on cash bail.
Second Officer Caught in Mombasa
In another operation, EACC arrested a traffic officer along the Mtwapa–Malindi Road. Upon arrest, Ksh13,750 in 100 notes was recovered, suspected to be proceeds of corruption.
Escape Attempt During Sting
During the same crackdown, another officer along Kerugoya–Kutus Road fled into bushes. Furthermore, he abandoned his official police attire while escaping the operation.
EACC Statement on Crackdown
The commission assured the public of continued vigilance against corrupt officers. It emphasized that operations would intensify during the festive season when bribery cases often spike.
Broader Anti-Corruption Efforts
EACC highlighted ongoing intelligence gathering and surveillance targeting public services prone to corruption. Therefore, the commission aims to promote integrity, accountability, and professionalism in public service.
Recent Arrests in Kisumu
Just days earlier, EACC apprehended three traffic officers along the Kisumu–Kisii Road at Sondu. The officers, including an inspector, were caught soliciting bribes without enforcing traffic regulations.
The latest arrests underscore EACC’s commitment to fighting corruption in Kenya’s traffic sector. Ultimately, the commission vows to protect public trust through accountability and transparency.
