Greenpark Pedestrian Underpass Nears Completion

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has confirmed that the Greenpark pedestrian underpass is almost complete. The agency expects the public to start using the facility in June.

The announcement came from the new Director General, Engineer Luka Kimeli. He spoke during an inspection of the ongoing works. According to Kimeli, contractors will finish remaining sections by March.

Thereafter, the public should access the underpass within two to three months.

KSh2 Billion Project at 99 Percent

The KSh2 billion project now stands at 99 percent completion. It serves pedestrians crossing the busy Haile Selassie, Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, and Ngong Road roundabout.

Consequently, the underpass will reduce accidents and traffic disruptions. Currently, contractors are finalising critical safety components. They are covering drainage systems and installing manholes.Underpass

Additionally, teams are completing structural sections inside the tunnels. These works will ensure proper water collection and pumping.

Modern Safety and Accessibility Features

KeNHA has already installed CCTV cameras throughout the facility. Furthermore, the underpass includes seven elevators for persons with disabilities. Engineers have also fitted adequate lighting to enhance visibility.

On security, the authority will rely on the nearest police station. Therefore, officers will provide round-the-clock monitoring.

Management and Commercial Spaces

Once complete, KeNHA will hand over management to another contractor. The contractor will oversee maintenance and lease 39 shops inside the facility. As a result, the project will generate revenue while enhancing urban mobility.

Although financing posed challenges, the government considers the underpass a pilot project. Officials plan to replicate similar designs at five to six junctions in Nairobi.Greenpark underpass

Other Major Infrastructure Projects

The government is also developing grade-separated structures across the city. One key project is the Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct. It will connect Valley Road and Ngong Road directly to the CBD.

Another major development is the Junction Mall Flyover. This KSh3.58 billion flyover will include protected walkways and cycling lanes. Authorities expect its completion by July 2027.
