Ruto’s Major Multibillion Road Projects Unveiled
New Expressway to Connect Nairobi and Thika
President William Ruto announced a new 60-kilometre expressway from Nairobi to Thika during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium.
The road will start at the Museum Hill interchange and end in Thika town.
Moreover, construction will begin in 2026 to ease heavy traffic on the Thika Superhighway.
Project Aims to Reduce Heavy Traffic
The new expressway will complement the existing superhighway.
Additionally, it will shorten travel time for commuters and boost movement along the corridor.
As a result, the project will support economic activity in Nairobi, Kiambu and neighbouring regions.
Part of Larger Multibillion Road Investments
This expressway forms part of several major road projects launched by the government.
For instance, President Ruto recently unveiled the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit and Nairobi–Mai Mahiu–Naivasha roads on November 28, 2025.
Furthermore, these projects show the government’s commitment to expanding Kenya’s transport network.
Key Features of the A8 Highway Expansion
The A8 Highway upgrade includes two major sections.
The Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit road stretches 175 kilometres.
Similarly, the Nairobi–Mai Mahiu–Naivasha section covers 58 kilometres.
Both corridors will be modernised into multi-lane dual carriageways to enhance traffic flow and safety.
Upgrade of Mombasa Road–Uhuru Highway–Waiyaki Way
During the Mashujaa Day celebrations, President Ruto announced plans to upgrade the JKIA–ABC Point road.
The project will beautify the corridor and align it with the Nairobi Expressway’s modern standards.
Additionally, the upgrade will reduce congestion along one of Kenya’s busiest roads.
Progress on the Isiolo–Mandera Highway
KeNHA announced the start of the second phase of the 70-kilometre Modogashe–Samatar road on December 9, 2025.
The third phase includes the 76-kilometre Rhamu–Mandera route.
This progress follows near completion of the first phase, the 195-kilometre Isiolo–Modogashe road.
Moreover, the World Bank funded the project with Ksh 81 billion.
Overall, the 750-kilometre highway forms a key part of the LAPSSET project.
New Road Projects in Western Kenya
President Ruto launched the upgrade of the 19-kilometre Kakamega Airstrip–Shinyalu–Chepsonoi road on October 30, 2025.
He also commissioned the 34-kilometre Turbo–Sikhendu road in Lugari, valued at Ksh 3.6 billion.
Consequently, these projects will improve transport links between Kakamega and Nandi counties.
Completion of the Rusinga Ring Road
KURA completed the 19-kilometre Rusinga Ring Road on December 9, 2025.
This Ksh 1.3 billion road is the first tarmacked road on Rusinga Island.
Therefore, it is expected to reshape the island’s economy and attract more tourism.
