Motorists Association Rejects New Expressway Proposal

MAK Opposes Ruto’s Expressway Plan
On December 15, the Motorists Association of Kenya rejected President Ruto’s proposal for another expressway. Moreover, the group labelled the project neither urgent nor a national priority.

Thika Superhighway Meets Global Standards
MAK stated that the Thika Superhighway already qualifies as an expressway by global standards. Additionally, it has no cross traffic, traffic lights, or roundabouts, and maintains controlled access.

Highway Handles Heavy Traffic Smoothly
The association noted that the superhighway handles nearly one million vehicles daily on busy days. Consequently, they argued the road remains effective and does not require duplication.

Proposed Improvements to Existing Sections
MAK urged the government to enhance sections of the highway instead of building a new one. For example, they recommended constructing a viaduct at Pangani to streamline traffic flow.

Call for Mass Transit Solutions
The association pressed for Bus Rapid Transit and Light Rail Transit along the corridor. Furthermore, they argued these solutions would benefit both motorists and commuters.

Expressway Design Principles Highlighted
MAK explained that expressways globally ensure uninterrupted, high-speed movement without traffic lights or pedestrian crossings. They added that entry and exit points are limited and managed through slip roads and acceleration lanes.

Focus on Safety and Efficiency
According to MAK, another expressway is unnecessary. Therefore, they urged the government to prioritize projects that enhance safety, efficiency, and equitable transport.

President Ruto Defends New Expressway
During Jamhuri Day celebrations, President Ruto announced plans for a new expressway from Museum Hill to Thika. He claimed the project would ease congestion along the busy Thika road.

Additional Road Projects Announced
On December 14, Ruto revealed plans to dual the Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road. Moreover, construction is expected to begin in February 2026.
