Kiambu-Ndumberi Road Upgrade Set for February 2026
Government Secures Funding for Road Project
On December 14, President William Ruto confirmed the dualling of the Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road will begin in February 2026. He stated that the government has already secured funding and finalized necessary construction plans.
President to Launch Ksh22 Billion Project
Ruto revealed he will personally launch the Ksh22 billion project next year. Moreover, he emphasized that the expansion will ease traffic congestion and improve mobility between Nairobi and Kiambu.
Road Expansion to Reduce Travel Time
The president noted that the route should take 20 minutes to Nairobi. However, congestion currently forces commuters to spend 40 minutes on the road.
Cabinet Approves Dual Carriageway Expansion
On November 11, the cabinet approved converting the road from two lanes into a dual carriageway. Additionally, the project will include bypasses, loops, and access roads to increase capacity and reduce journey times.
Accessibility Features for All Road Users
The project will feature lanes for non-motorized transport and commuter facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. Therefore, it aims to guarantee accessibility and safety for all road users.
Part of Broader Transport Modernization
According to the government, the dualling supports Nairobi’s metropolitan transport modernization plan. Furthermore, it aligns with Kenya Vision 2030 and UN Sustainable Development Goals on infrastructure and mobility.
Expressway from Nairobi to Thika Announced
Two days earlier, Ruto announced a 60-kilometre expressway from Nairobi to Thika town. He explained that the expressway will complement the existing Thika road and reduce congestion.
Expressway Construction to Begin in 2026
Ruto confirmed the expressway project will also start in 2026. Consequently, it will facilitate faster movement of people and goods between Nairobi and Kiambu.
