Ten Killed in Chabera Road Accident on Kisii-Kisumu Highway
Fatal Crash Reported in Homabay County
On December 14, at least ten people died in a night crash along the Kisii-Kisumu highway near Chabera. The accident involved two lorries and a private van traveling from Kakamega towards Nyamira.
Family Among the Casualties
Police confirmed the victims were family members returning to Nyamaiya after attending a wedding in Kakamega County. Several survivors sustained injuries and were rushed to Agoro Sare Hospital and Matata Nursing Home in Oyugis town.
Governor Wanga Sends Condolences
Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga expressed condolences to the bereaved families. Moreover, she pledged county support for the injured and directed emergency services to coordinate rescue operations.
Rising Concern Over Road Safety
The Chabera crash follows a surge in fatal accidents nationwide. On December 13, eight people died in Nyamira after a matatu collided with a trailer.
Former MP Jirongo Dies in Separate Crash
Earlier, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died in a head-on collision along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. Consequently, the tragedies have renewed focus on Kenya’s worsening road safety record.
NTSA Reports Rising Fatalities
According to NTSA, 4,458 people had died in road accidents by early December 2025. This figure already surpassed the 4,311 deaths recorded throughout 2024.
Unsafe Road Behaviour Blamed
NTSA linked most accidents to overspeeding, driver fatigue, drunk driving, and dangerous overtaking. Furthermore, lane indiscipline continues to contribute significantly to rising fatalities.
Vulnerable Road Users at Risk
Pedestrians remain the most vulnerable, followed by motorcyclists and their passengers. Therefore, NTSA urged strict adherence to traffic rules and vehicle roadworthiness checks.
Economic Impact of Road Crashes
NTSA estimated crashes cost Kenya between 3% and 5% of GDP annually. Additionally, the authority stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility for all users.
