Truphena Muthoni Makes History With 72-Hour Tree Hug
22-year-old environmentalist Truphena Muthoni has officially broken the Guinness World Record after hugging a tree for an astonishing 72 hours.
The Nyeri-based activist began her attempt on December 8, pushing herself through three days without food or sleep. She surpassed her previous record of 48 hours, using the challenge as a silent protest against deforestation.
Speaking after the successful attempt, Truphena said the peaceful demonstration was meant to unite people around environmental conservation.
“This protest bypasses all differences. When we protest in other ways, we hear stories of goons. But this triggers humanity,” she said, describing tree-hugging as therapeutic and a reminder of nature’s importance.

National Support for the Young Activist
Her attempt attracted nationwide attention, drawing crowds to the Nyeri Governor’s office, where the challenge took place.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga flagged off the record attempt and encouraged the 22-year-old throughout the marathon.
Pan-African scholar PLO Lumumba travelled to Nyeri to support her on Day Two, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua praised her efforts on social media.
Mainstream and online media also spotlighted her endurance, amplifying her message on environmental protection.
