The teachers’ union wants TSC and SRC to act as Nyatike teachers face harsh conditions and long journeys to examination centres.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to resolve hardship allowance delays affecting Nyatike teachers. The union says teachers have waited years for the payments while working in difficult conditions.

Nyatike MP Tom Odege said Parliament had approved his petition seeking the allowance, but implementation had stalled. Speaking at a public gathering in the constituency, he questioned why teachers were still waiting.

Meanwhile, KNUT Secretary-General Collins Oyuu said Nyatike qualifies for the allowance, yet teachers have not received it. He also urged teachers to engage the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to push for implementation.

Hardship allowance delays draw scrutiny ahead of exams

Oyuu highlighted the strain on teachers as national examinations approach, particularly those travelling to invigilation centres. He said some must wake up as early as 4am to reach their assigned centres because of the area’s difficult conditions.

Nyatike faces recurrent floods, drought and other hardships that make attracting and retaining teachers difficult. Against that backdrop, Oyuu called on SRC to act on the allowance report and ensure fair treatment for local teachers.

He argued that teachers in Nyatike deserve the same treatment as their colleagues elsewhere. KNUT Migori County Treasurer Felix Oloo also called for the union’s involvement in securing the payments.

Oloo said implementation would not happen on its own, stressing that the union must take part in the process.
