In a statement dated Thursday, October 29, 2026, Vivo Energy identified the outlet as Shell Westview. The incident reportedly took place on the night of Wednesday, October 28.
The video shows a man directing petrol from a fuel nozzle onto the outside of a parked vehicle. Another person stands nearby as he sprays the fuel.
Vivo reviews Shell petrol-spraying incident
Vivo Energy described the conduct as irresponsible, reckless and negligent, stressing the danger to people at the station. It also said the behaviour fell short of the safety standards expected across its outlets.
The company said it was reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, the retailer operating the station had immediately referred the matter to the relevant authorities for investigation and action.
Vivo Energy, which markets and distributes Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in Kenya, said safety remained its highest priority. It also said it was reinforcing safety requirements throughout its network to maintain established standards consistently.
Video prompts calls for accountability
The footage drew criticism online, with Kenyans raising concerns about the risks of mishandling highly flammable petrol. Some social media users also called for disciplinary action against both the motorist and the attendant on duty.
Others questioned how the motorist came to handle the nozzle in that manner. They argued that the attendant should also face scrutiny for failing to intervene and prevent the dangerous conduct.
The public response focused on safety compliance and the responsibilities of motorists and attendants when handling fuel. Meanwhile, Vivo Energy thanked those who raised concerns and reaffirmed its commitment to safety across its service stations.
