Former President Uhuru Kenyatta sparked laughter at a funeral in Murang’a on Friday, September 18, 2026, after referring to himself as “Sponyo” while concluding his remarks.
Uhuru was attending the burial of Christine Waruguru Kariuki in Gikuu, Kiharu Constituency, Murang’a County. She was the mother of former State House Comptroller George Kariuki.
Uhuru Uses ‘Sponyo’ Nickname
During his address, Uhuru explained that he had decided to read a prepared condolence message instead of speaking off the cuff.

“Sponyo” is a Sheng-style variation of “sponsor.” The nickname has featured in recent political exchanges involving Uhuru and President William Ruto. Ruto and his allies have used the term in claims that Uhuru supports or finances opposition political activities.
However, Uhuru’s funeral remark did not provide a detailed response to those allegations. Instead, he largely kept his condolence message focused on the deceased and her contribution to her family and community.

Uhuru attended the burial alongside former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro. The appearance came amid increased political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
However, Uhuru did not turn his main funeral address into a political speech. His brief “Sponyo” reference became the most notable moment of the address.
