The Kiharu MP wants leadership records to guide the opposition’s choice, while Gachagua prioritises grassroots mobilisation.

People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro has urged leaders choosing the 2027 opposition candidate to weigh leadership quality alongside voter numbers.

Speaking during public engagements in Mathioya and Kangema constituencies in Murang’a, the Kiharu MP called for scrutiny of candidates’ experience. He warned against replacing President William Ruto with someone who could repeat his administration’s shortcomings.

His remarks challenge former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s emphasis on building a strong electoral base. However, Nyoro acknowledged that opposition leaders must seek votes while assessing those seeking the presidency and running mate position.

Track records should guide 2027 opposition candidate choice

Nyoro urged Kenyans to examine what potential candidates achieved in their previous roles before backing them for national leadership. He noted that leaders had served as teachers, MPs, senators and government administrators.

He also argued that Kenya’s challenges should shape the choice of its next president. To illustrate his point, he suggested a general would suit a country facing war, while an economist would suit economic challenges.

Meanwhile, Nyoro defended PPK’s participation in opposition activities against criticism from leaders in Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP). They have argued that PPK’s separate mobilisation efforts could divide opposition votes.

Nyoro countered that his party was gathering support across regions for the shared goal of unseating Ruto. He also expressed readiness to contest the presidency if the coalition selected him.

Gachagua puts grassroots mobilisation first

A day earlier, Gachagua had urged opposition leaders to concentrate on grassroots work rather than criticise his electoral strategy. He addressed supporters at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri.

The DCP leader argued that press conferences, political declarations and competing manifestos would not secure victory without enough voters. He therefore challenged his colleagues to seek support directly from Kenyans instead of relying on boardroom discussions.

Gachagua also pledged to support whoever the opposition ultimately chooses to face Ruto in the 2027 election. His position places voter mobilisation at the centre of preparations for the contest.

Nyoro, however, cautioned that regional supremacy contests and political chest-thumping could weaken efforts to build a national coalition. He urged opposition leaders to embrace one another regardless of the voter numbers each could command.
