Kenya Receives KSh 10M WHO Emergency Kits to Combat Flood Health Crisis

On March 18, 2026, the Ministry of Health Kenya received emergency health kits worth KSh 10 million. The World Health Organization donated the supplies to support flood response efforts.

Moreover, the donation targets communities affected by the ongoing March–April–May long rains. These rains have triggered widespread flooding across several regions in Kenya.

Handover Ceremony at Afya House

The official handover took place at Afya House in Nairobi. Officials received the kits on behalf of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.

Specifically, Secretary Administration Adan Halakhe represented the ministry during the ceremony. Meanwhile, WHO Kenya Acting Representative Dr. Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo led the handover.

Critical Supplies to Support 5,000 People

The emergency kits will support approximately 5,000 people in severely affected areas. Furthermore, the supplies strengthen frontline healthcare services during the crisis.

The kits include essential items such as:

  • Cholera management and rapid diagnostic kits
  • Water treatment solutions for safe drinking water
  • Trauma kits for flood-related injuries
  • Essential medicines and life-saving equipment

Therefore, these resources will help health workers respond quickly and effectively.

Preventing Disease Outbreaks During Floods

Flooding often increases the risk of disease outbreaks. Consequently, the kits aim to curb water-borne and vector-borne diseases.

For instance, cholera and malaria cases typically rise during heavy rains. Thus, early intervention remains critical to protect vulnerable communities. In addition, access to clean water reduces infection risks significantly.

Strengthening Kenya’s Emergency Response Plan

This donation supports the Long Rains Flood Contingency Plan 2026. The plan focuses on disease surveillance, emergency relief, and continuity of care.

At the same time, WHO continues to expand its support across the country. Recently, it delivered 12.68 tons of medicines to the Kenya Red Cross.

These combined efforts highlight a coordinated response to the flood crisis. Ultimately, timely interventions will save lives and protect public health.
