A 26-year-old woman, Bernice Achieng, was arrested at Buruburu Police Station on Monday, September 21, 2026, after police allegedly found 12 rolls of bhang while she visited her boyfriend in custody.
Bhang Hidden Inside Bread
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Achieng arrived at the station carrying an unsealed loaf of bread for her detained boyfriend.
The unusual packaging reportedly raised suspicion among officers at the report office desk.
A search of the loaf allegedly uncovered:
- Five rolls of suspected bhang
- One matchbox
Police then conducted a further search of Achieng and allegedly found seven additional rolls hidden inside her jacket pocket. This brought the total number of recovered rolls to 12.
Woman Remains in Custody
Following the discovery, police arrested Achieng and secured the recovered items as exhibits. According to the DCI, she remains in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court.
The allegations have not been tested in court, and Achieng remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Similar Incident Reported in Ruai
The Buruburu incident comes days after another alleged attempt to smuggle prohibited items into a Nairobi police station.
At Ruai Police Station, an 18-year-old woman was arrested after police allegedly discovered pliers and a shear hidden beneath food she had brought for three remanded suspects.
The incidents have highlighted the importance of searches on food and other items brought to people held in police custody.
Police have continued to intercept alleged attempts to deliver prohibited items to detainees. The Buruburu case remains subject to further investigation and court proceedings.
