Gladys Njeri Mwangi says she paid Sh6,000 weekly but missed her payout; Margaret Muthoni Wangechi denies the allegations.
Margaret Muthoni Wangechi has denied a chama fraud charge involving Sh108,000 that a Nairobi businesswoman says she contributed. The court granted Wangechi Sh30,000 cash bail pending trial.
The charge sheet alleges Wangechi obtained the money from Gladys Njeri Mwangi between April 3 and August 12, 2026. It places the alleged offence in Lunga Lunga, Makadara Sub-County, Nairobi.
Wangechi allegedly falsely presented herself as the group’s treasurer and collected contributions with intent to defraud. Meanwhile, her lawyer, Elvin Onsongo, asked the court for leniency, saying she was a widow.
Chama fraud complaint follows missed payout
Mwangi says her neighbour persuaded her to join the neighbourhood merry-go-round savings group. Because she trusted the woman, she joined and contributed weekly for five months.
Under the arrangement, Mwangi says she had to pay Sh6,000 in cash every Wednesday. However, she says she missed out when other members received their shares on August 12.
After Mwangi demanded an explanation, Wangechi allegedly said she had already spent the money. She then asked for two weeks to refund the contributions, Mwangi says.
The promised refund did not arrive, prompting Mwangi to report the matter at Lunga Lunga Police Station. Wangechi disputes the allegations and awaits trial.
