Detectives are investigating the death of a 19-year-old following an alleged assault in Eastleigh.
A woman identified as Ifrah is in custody as detectives review CCTV footage and search for other suspects following the death of 19-year-old Zakaria.
Detectives have been granted 21 days to complete investigations into the death of a 19-year-old man following an alleged assault on a street in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the teenager, identified only as Zakaria. A woman identified as Ifrah was arrested shortly after the incident and remains at the centre of the inquiry, although her exact alleged role has not been made clear.
In an application filed by an investigating officer from the Starehe DCI office, police outlined the confrontation and the inquiries they still needed to carry out. These include examining CCTV footage, locating the suspected weapon and obtaining official post-mortem results.
Confrontation on 11th Street
A police report lodged at Eastleigh North Police Station places the incident on the evening of September 15, along 11th Street near Sultan Tower.
Police said Zakaria became involved in an argument with another man, who has not yet been arrested. During the confrontation, the teenager was allegedly hit with a blunt object and collapsed shortly afterwards.
Good Samaritans took him to Nairobi East Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police later recovered his body from the back seat of a Toyota Succeed and moved it to City Mortuary.
The account presented by investigators describes an alleged blow during the street altercation. However, detectives told the court they were still awaiting the official post-mortem findings as part of their investigation into the death.
Police Set Out Grounds for Detention
Detectives have linked Ifrah to the alleged fatal assault, but the application did not clarify precisely how she was involved in the confrontation between Zakaria and the other man.
In seeking to keep her in custody, police argued that she posed a flight risk because she had no permanent residence. They also raised concerns that releasing her could create an opportunity to interfere with witnesses or tamper with evidence.
Those concerns formed part of the grounds put before the court as investigators sought additional time to pursue the case. The allegations against Ifrah remain under investigation.
CCTV Review and Search for Suspects
The court heard that detectives were continuing to review CCTV footage from the area where the confrontation occurred. They were also searching for the blunt object allegedly used to strike Zakaria.
The man said to have argued with the teenager remains at large, alongside other suspects investigators believe may have been involved.
The 21-day period gives detectives time to continue those inquiries while awaiting the post-mortem results. Establishing the circumstances of the alleged assault and the roles of those linked to it remains central to the investigation.
