The comedian says body shaming and unfounded drug-use rumours have deepened her sense of isolation despite international fame.

Elsa Majimbo has spoken about the emotional toll of online harassment, saying years of scrutiny have left her feeling isolated. The 24-year-old comedian addressed body shaming and unfounded drug-use rumours in an emotional social media video.

She said critics regularly target her appearance, weight and clothing, then draw conclusions about her health. However, Majimbo rejected those allegations and challenged the lack of empathy she encounters online.

Majimbo said some people had called her a prostitute because of her outfits. Others had used her slim frame to spread rumours about drug use, which she dismissed.

She also questioned why people who do not know her express such hostility towards her. Although her career takes her to red carpets and charity events, she said she spends much of her time alone.

The comedian described herself as someone who keeps to herself, has very few friends and rarely parties. Meanwhile, her appearances at events reflect her interests rather than a busy social life. She said she generally avoids making videos about these experiences, but chose to address them this time.

Mixed reactions follow her disclosure

Her comments drew sympathy from some fans, who called for an end to body shaming and online harassment. Other users, however, connected the backlash to what they viewed as a change in her public image.

Those critics argued that her more luxury-focused online presence had created distance between her and some audiences. Their reactions contrasted with supporters’ appeals for greater empathy towards public figures.

Majimbo gained international recognition during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdowns through her humorous videos and distinctive delivery. However, her relationship with Kenyan social media users has often been strained.

She has previously described online hostility, including people wishing her failure. Those experiences also contributed to her decision to build her life outside Kenya.
