Old mobile phones, chargers and earphones for recycling

Safaricom asks Kenyans to drop unwanted small electronics at its retail shops nationwide by November 13, 2026, with no cash rewards.

Kenyans can hand in unused phones, chargers and earphones through the Safaricom recycling drive until November 13, 2026. The company is collecting unwanted small electronics at its retail shops across the country.

In a notice on its official social media platforms, Safaricom encouraged customers to give discarded gadgets a second life. However, the company clarified that participants will not receive financial rewards in exchange for their old electronics.

The initiative aims to recover valuable materials from unwanted devices while reducing environmental pollution. It also seeks to keep electronic waste out of landfills.

Safaricom recycling drive targets electronic waste

Electronic waste includes discarded electrical and electronic equipment, such as mobile phones, computers, chargers and batteries. Some devices contain hazardous substances that can contaminate soil and water through improper disposal. Burning electronic components can also release harmful pollutants into the air.

The collection effort comes amid growing concern over the environmental impact of discarded electronics. Consumers increasingly replace mobile phones and accessories, leaving old devices and other unwanted equipment to dispose of.

Safaricom has previously partnered with electronic waste management organisations to support the collection and recycling of discarded equipment. These partners include the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Centre, also known as the WEEE Centre.

For the current exercise, customers can take their unwanted small gadgets to any Safaricom retail shop nationwide. The company is encouraging responsible disposal through recycling rather than offering payment for the devices.
