President William Ruto announced the road plans during a church service in Nyamira County.
President William Ruto says the four-lane road will extend through western Kenya to Kisumu and connect with the Eldoret-Malaba Highway.
President William Ruto has announced a Mau Summit dualling plan, with construction expected to start around April 2027. The proposed four-lane road would run through western Kenya to Kisumu and connect with the Eldoret-Malaba Highway.
Speaking at an interdenominational church service at Nyamaiya Stadium in Nyamira County, Ruto outlined the proposed route. He said work would follow completion of the Ksh200 billion Rironi-Mau Summit highway.
For now, however, the President said his priority remained completing the Nairobi-Mau Summit corridor. He placed the next phase of road construction in 2027.
Mau Summit dualling route and highway links
The planned road would start at Mau Summit in Nakuru County, then pass through Kericho, Bomet and Nyamira towards Kisii. The proposal also includes widening the Kisii-Kisumu Highway to four lanes through Kisii, Homa Bay and Kisumu counties.
Ruto outlined an onward connection through Nandi towards Eldoret and the Eldoret-Malaba Highway. Construction of that highway is also expected to begin around the same time.
Meanwhile, the government is advancing the 243-kilometre Eldoret-Malaba project under a public-private partnership model. The road remains at the preparation and feasibility study stage.
The PPP Authority, Kenya National Highways Authority and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank completed a pre-feasibility study in February 2026. Separately, Ruto said expansion of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway would likely begin in 2027. He said teams had already completed its feasibility studies and design.
Nyamira university, stadiums and hospital commitments
Beyond the highway plans, Ruto announced further commitments for roads, education, health and sports in Nyamira County. He said construction of Nyamira University was progressing towards completion in September 2027. The institution would then begin admitting students that month.
The President also announced a Ksh1 billion stadium in Magwagwa and another stadium in Nyamaiya. He said the facilities would support sports development and local talent.
In health, Ruto announced funding worth billions of shillings to upgrade Nyamira County Referral Hospital to level five status. These commitments formed part of his tour of the Gusii region.
Ruto plans to spend four days in Nyamira and Kisii counties during the visit. The tour also comes as he seeks to strengthen support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
