Former Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria is receiving hospital treatment after reportedly collapsing during a meeting on Thursday evening. Colleagues said he suddenly fell ill at the Nairobi meeting, prompting them to seek emergency medical care.

Mosiria later confirmed that he was undergoing treatment. He also asked Kenyans and his supporters to keep him in their prayers, expressing confidence in his recovery.

Geoffrey Mosiria hospitalised days after county exit

The hospital admission came eight days after Governor Johnson Sakaja removed Mosiria from his county position. He had headed the Public Participation, Citizen Engagement and Customer Service docket.

A circular dated October 21 communicated the leadership change. County Secretary and Head of Public Service Dr Machel Waikenda signed the document. Zipporah Njeri Mwangi took over the docket in an acting capacity.

Before his removal, Mosiria had publicly announced plans to challenge Sakaja in the 2027 Nairobi governor’s race. He presented himself as a problem-solving candidate, promising to improve health services and tackle flooding. His campaign priorities also included addressing weak service delivery across the capital.

Political fallout with Sakaja

Mosiria first served as chief officer in the Health Facilities docket before moving to Environment in August 2024. He later took charge of Citizen Engagement and Customer Service. During his county service, he became known for public enforcement operations targeting activities he considered harmful to Nairobi’s cleanliness and order.

Meanwhile, his relationship with Sakaja had deteriorated over nearly three years. Mosiria accused the governor of sidelining him, reducing his budget and stripping him of key powers. Those complaints included the loss of his accounting officer role.

He also rejected corruption allegations involving medicines and chemists during his tenure in the Health Department. Mosiria maintained that he served diligently and challenged anyone with evidence to pursue legal channels.

Sakaja is expected to seek a second term in 2027. Mosiria’s declared candidacy therefore puts him in direct political competition with his former boss.
