A giant Nile perch from Lake Victoria has drawn attention online after appearing tied upright behind a matatu. The fish hangs vertically against the back door, appearing to stretch almost the vehicle’s full height.

The viral clip shows a white matatu bearing registration number KDH 623K. It also carries the words OUMA FISH POINT and BIG FISH.

Videos of the unusual cargo have circulated online, leaving many Kenyans amazed by its size. The species is locally known as Mbuta or Sangara.

How a giant Nile perch grows

Nile perch rank among Lake Victoria’s largest freshwater fish, reaching about two metres long and up to 200 kilograms. These figures describe how large the species can grow, rather than measurements of the fish in the clip.

As aggressive predators, Nile perch eat smaller fish, including tilapia and other species living in the lake. With abundant food and few natural enemies, they can continue growing for many years.

However, species and diet are only part of what determines a fish’s eventual size. Age, food supply and water conditions also influence growth, alongside whether a fish lives wild or on a farm.

Tilapia, by comparison, usually remain much smaller and mostly eat plants, algae and tiny aquatic organisms. They can grow larger in well-managed ponds with good feeding, clean water and enough space.

Beyond their striking size, Nile perch support livelihoods around Lake Victoria. Following their introduction decades ago, they became a major income source for fishermen, traders and fish-processing companies.
