Detectives recovered suspected false police credentials and handcuffs after residents reported a man allegedly demanding money on Jogoo Road.

Detectives have arrested a man in a suspected GSU impersonation and extortion case along Jogoo Road in Nairobi. Residents alerted police after he allegedly demanded money from members of the public while claiming to be an officer.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said officers arrested the suspect at Jogoo Road Police Station at DC Stage. The agency announced the arrest in a statement on November 5.

GSU impersonation claim leads to document checks

During questioning, the suspect allegedly introduced himself as a police sergeant attached to the General Service Unit Training School in Embakasi. However, officers checked his claimed identity and found documents they suspected were forged.

Investigators recovered a certificate of appointment bearing what DCI described as a fictitious police service number. The agency said the suspect allegedly used the document to support his claim that he served in the police.

Detectives also recovered a pair of handcuffs and two keys. They believe these items helped make his alleged impersonation appear credible. DCI said officers were processing the suspect in custody ahead of his expected arraignment.

Earlier arrests over alleged impersonation

The Jogoo Road case follows other arrests involving alleged impersonation of police officers and government officials. On October 4, DCI arrested two suspects in Narok Town over allegations of posing as a senior government official to defraud the public.

In a separate operation on August 3, detectives arrested another suspected police impersonator at Yaya Centre in Kilimani. Investigators recovered a CZ 75 SP-01 pistol, an empty 9mm magazine, handcuffs and documents bearing allegedly false police credentials.

A subsequent search of that suspect’s home in Waluku Village, Dagoretti North, uncovered 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Investigators found the ammunition packed in two boxes.

Earlier, in June, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission arrested a man accused of impersonating a commission investigator. He allegedly demanded a Ksh2 million bribe from a company director in exchange for stopping an alleged corruption investigation.
