President William Ruto urges motorists to obey traffic rules and directs authorities to inspect public service vehicles after the fatal highway collision.
President William Ruto has mourned 23 people killed in the Kanga road crash near Mtito Andei. He also ordered thorough inspections of public service vehicles following the collision on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.
In a social media condolence message, Ruto expressed sympathy with the victims’ families and friends. He described the deaths as a devastating loss for both the affected families and the country.
The President also wished those injured a quick recovery, saying the nation shared the bereaved families’ grief.
Kanga road crash prompts safety directive
Ruto directed the relevant authorities to inspect public service vehicles thoroughly to check compliance with required safety standards. He said the checks should form part of efforts to prevent road accidents.
Alongside the inspection directive, the President urged motorists to drive carefully and follow traffic regulations. He particularly called on drivers of public service vehicles to exercise caution to prevent further deaths.
His message placed emphasis on both vehicle safety and responsible driving. However, it did not provide further details about the cause of the crash or the condition of those injured.
Renewed concern over highway safety
The fatal collision has renewed concerns about safety on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway, a key route connecting Nairobi to the Coast. Passenger buses, commercial vehicles and private motorists all use the corridor.
The accident has also prompted fresh calls for motorists to observe traffic rules and authorities to strengthen enforcement. Ruto’s directive focuses on ensuring public service vehicles meet safety requirements, alongside his appeal for greater caution behind the wheel.
