Mandatory weight checks have improved transporter compliance since the facility opened in February, cluster manager Faith Wanjugu Njani says.

Kanyonyo Weighbridge has improved freight transporter compliance on the Garissa road network, cluster manager Faith Wanjugu Njani said. The facility began operations on February 20, 2025, to help curb overloading and protect roads.

All vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes must enter the facility for screening before continuing their journeys. Njani, who also serves as assistant manager, said transporters had significantly improved their compliance since operations began.

The checks aim to keep freight loads within legal limits and protect existing road infrastructure. They also support wider efforts to enforce axle-load regulations across the road network.

How Kanyonyo Weighbridge handles overloaded vehicles

Trucks within the permitted weight limits can proceed after screening. However, overloaded vehicles must move to a holding yard, where officials detain them for the necessary compliance procedures.

Njani said mandatory screening helps protect the Garissa road and other routes from damage caused by overloaded vehicles. The process therefore requires vehicles above the weight threshold to divert to the weighbridge for checks.

Despite the improvement, some transporters remain unwilling to cooperate with enforcement procedures, Njani said. Resistance from these operators continues to pose a challenge for the facility.

The enforcement effort also aims to limit road deterioration caused by excessive freight loads. Protecting the network from such damage can help reduce maintenance costs and extend its durability.
