The maritime authority urges sea users to postpone non-essential trips during bad weather, wear life jackets and monitor official forecasts.
The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has warned coastal residents and sea users of potentially dangerous weather and sea conditions expected between September and December, urging caution during fishing, transport and other maritime activities.
Strong winds, rough seas, high waves and heavy rainfall could threaten vessels and people operating at sea or along the shoreline. The authority also warned that reduced visibility could make conditions more hazardous for those navigating coastal waters.
The advisory affects boat operators, fisherfolk, passengers and other maritime users whose activities expose them to changing sea conditions. It also calls on coastal communities to stay alert and follow safety instructions from the relevant authorities.
Sea Users Urged to Avoid Dangerous Conditions
In a public notice issued through Director General Omae Nyarandi, KMA advised people against going to sea during adverse weather and rough conditions. Fisherfolk and other maritime users were urged to exercise extreme caution and defer non-essential activities when the weather deteriorates.
For vessels already at sea, the authority recommended monitoring weather updates and seeking safe shelter where necessary. The guidance addresses both decisions made before departure and the precautions needed when conditions change during a journey.
The warning covers a period in which fishing and maritime transport remain important to coastal communities. KMA’s advice is to avoid unnecessary exposure to dangerous conditions and use official information to guide decisions about sea activities.
Life Jackets and Vessel Safety
KMA directed passengers and crew to wear life jackets while on board. It also urged boat owners and operators to ensure their vessels are properly secured, whether underway, moored or at anchor.
The precautions extend beyond boats making journeys. The authority’s notice also addresses vessels that are stationary, alongside the need for those travelling on the water to use life jackets and remain aware of worsening weather.
Residents along the coastline were advised to watch for strong winds, high waves and heavy rainfall. KMA urged communities to remain alert and comply with instructions issued by authorities as conditions develop.
Monitor Forecasts and Report Emergencies
The public was urged to keep checking official weather and maritime safety updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) and KMA throughout the advisory period.
KMD issues daily marine forecasts for Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu counties. These forecasts provide information on prevailing sea conditions to help mariners, fishermen and coastal residents make safety decisions.
KMA also advised that maritime incidents and emergencies should be reported to the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (RMRCC). Sea users were urged to remain attentive to official updates rather than proceed with non-essential activities when conditions become unsafe.
