KNEC says preparations are complete as Grade 6 and Grade 9 candidates prepare for the five-day national assessment exercise.

More than 2.4 million learners across Kenya will begin their KPSEA and KJSEA assessments on Monday. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) says it has completed preparations for the nationwide exercise.

The five-day assessment exercise will start at 8:30am, involving candidates in Grade 6 and Grade 9. Learners completed rehearsals on Friday, while teachers and examination officials finalised arrangements at assessment centres.

KPSEA and KJSEA candidate numbers

KNEC figures show that 1,298,089 Grade 6 learners have registered for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA). Meanwhile, 1,130,669 Grade 9 learners will take the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).

Together, the two groups bring the total number of candidates to 2,428,758. Both assessments form part of Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), evaluating learners at key stages of basic education.

Preparations and assessment integrity

With rehearsals concluded, assessment centres now turn their attention to the start of the national exercise. KNEC’s confirmation of readiness follows the completion of arrangements involving teachers and examination officials across the country.

Teachers, supervisors and other examination personnel have been urged to uphold integrity and follow established assessment guidelines. Security officials have also reported calm conditions ahead of the exercise, with preparations in place.

Grade 9 learners prepare for senior school

The KJSEA assesses learners at the end of Grade 9 as they prepare to enter senior school. Its results will contribute to decisions on their progression, making it an important stage in Kenya’s education reforms.

Meanwhile, the KPSEA evaluates Grade 6 learners as they complete primary-level education under the CBC framework. The two assessments support the government’s implementation of competency-based learning and its evaluation of learners’ progress.
