Customs warehouse goods listed for KRA auction

KRA plans a December 28–31, 2026 auction of unclaimed goods, including ceiling materials, ethanol, smartphones, tiles and sugar.

A KRA auction notice has given traders and importers 30 days to clear goods from several customs warehouses. Owners must complete the required customs procedures and remove their consignments or risk losing them through public auction.

The Kenya Revenue Authority issued the notice on November 6, listing goods at Naivasha, Eldoret, Nakuru and Lodwar. It has scheduled the online auction for December 28 to 31, 2026.

Meanwhile, prospective buyers can inspect the goods on December 23 and 24 during official working hours. They will need to visit the respective warehouses before placing bids through KRA’s online auction platform.

KRA auction notice lists goods across five facilities

At the Naivasha Inland Container Depot, the notice covers 1,472 packages of mineral fibre ceiling materials and ceiling grids. KRA warned that it would treat the consignment as abandoned unless owners clear and remove it within 30 days.

The authority also listed several ethanol consignments at the Eldoret Customs Warehouse. These include 54 drums containing 250 litres each, alongside separate batches of 125, 32, 35 and 32 drums.

At the Eldoret International Airport Customs Warehouse, the inventory includes 430 used smartphones and another 40 smartphones. It also lists five laptops, a piano, 49 Plantronics Blackwire earphones and 320 assorted perfumes.

Meanwhile, the Nakuru Customs Warehouse holds 927 cartons of modern tiles and 125 bags of sugar. Those consignments also face auction if their owners fail to collect them within the stipulated period.

In Lodwar, KRA listed 665 empty beer crates across four consignments at the customs station warehouse. Some of those goods have remained at the facility since April 2022.

Customs law sets clearance deadline

Section 42 of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004, allows KRA to auction uncollected warehouse goods. However, the authority must first give owners a 30-day notice to clear them.

KRA can also auction goods when owners fail to pay the required import duties and taxes. For perishable goods and animals, the law allows sales without the usual notice period.

Some consignments on the current list have remained in customs storage for more than four years. Their owners now face disposal of the goods, including through the scheduled public auction, unless they meet the clearance deadline.
