Manchester United beat Roma 3-2 in their Champions League meeting at Old Trafford.
Matheus Cunha scores twice late on to lift pressure on Michael Carrick, while PSG maintain their perfect Champions League start.
A dramatic Man United comeback secured a 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Meanwhile, holders Paris Saint-Germain maintained their perfect start by crushing Villarreal 6-0.
United trailed by two goals inside 18 minutes after Mathias Soule scored and Donyell Malen converted a penalty. However, Bruno Fernandes launched the recovery before Matheus Cunha struck twice in three minutes near the final whistle.
The result eased pressure on manager Michael Carrick ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Aston Villa. Villa, meanwhile, lost 3-0 at Barcelona.
Man United comeback transforms Old Trafford mood
Anger dominated the first half as supporters threw tennis balls and other objects onto the pitch. Fans also directed abusive chants at the club’s majority owners, the Glazer family.
Roma could not protect their advantage, however, and Fernandes reduced the deficit in the 58th minute. Goalkeeper Devis Vasquez saved his initial penalty, but encroachment by Roma players gave the United captain another opportunity.
Fernandes converted the retake, setting up Cunha’s decisive late double and celebrations in the stands. Cunha subsequently received a red card in stoppage time.
Afterwards, Carrick said he had urged his players to stay positive at half-time, drawing on previous Old Trafford recoveries. He also praised their second-half performance, while Fernandes said the team needed to deliver a result for supporters.
For Roma, the defeat brought another collapse after they surrendered a commanding lead against Real Madrid earlier this season. That match had accounted for their only other defeat.
PSG set scoring record as Bayern and Inter win
In contrast to United’s difficult start, PSG overwhelmed Villarreal with four goals in eight first-half minutes. Joao Neves, Desire Doue, Senny Mayulu and Fabian Ruiz delivered the fastest four-goal burst in the competition’s history.
Ruiz then added another goal, while teenager David Boly completed the scoring to send PSG top of the table. Luis Enrique’s side achieved the rout without Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes.
Enrique praised his team’s sustained performance and said their constant pressing made life difficult for Villarreal.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 in Madrid through second-half goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer. The victory moved Bayern into the top eight despite several notable absences.
Inter Milan also responded to their weekend derby defeat with a 3-0 victory over Feyenoord. Yann Bisseck, Pio Esposito and Piotr Zielinski scored for the Italian side.
Before kick-off, clubs observed a moment’s silence for Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel, who died aged 30. He suffered fatal injuries in a collision with FC Andorra’s goalkeeper during a Spanish second-division match.
