Fernandes backs Michael Carrick after United overturn a two-goal deficit against Roma to end a nine-game winless run.

Bruno Fernandes believes the Man United fightback against Roma can mark a turning point in their troubled season. United recovered from two goals down to win 3-2 at Old Trafford in the Champions League.

Fernandes started the recovery with a penalty before Matheus Cunha scored twice in the final 10 minutes. The victory ended United’s nine-game winless run and revived their European campaign after defeats to Atletico Madrid and Como.

Man United fightback lifts hopes

A poor first half had left United facing another setback, but Fernandes gave them a route back. He converted his penalty at the second attempt after a Roma defender’s encroachment prompted a retake following his saved effort.

Cunha then completed the turnaround with two late goals, giving United a much-needed win amid their struggles.

Speaking to Amazon Prime, Fernandes acknowledged supporters’ frustration with a club they expect to win regularly and challenge for trophies. However, he stressed that the players shared those feelings and wanted to improve the situation.

The midfielder also expressed hope that the result would begin a better period for United. Asked whether the comeback should become a turning point, he agreed that it should.

Fernandes backs Carrick amid scrutiny

Meanwhile, Fernandes rejected speculation about his relationship with under-pressure manager Michael Carrick, describing claims about their dealings as false. He maintained his confidence in Carrick, the coaching staff and his teammates.

The midfielder had criticised Carrick’s tactics after United’s 4-1 defeat to Como earlier in the league phase. Carrick subsequently left him out of the starting side for the 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth.

However, Fernandes said the manager benched him because his performances fell short, a decision he considered fair. He also acknowledged that many people viewed his omission as punishment for his comments.

Even if that had motivated the decision, Fernandes said Carrick had the authority to act and he must accept it.

Fernandes returned to the starting line-up against Chelsea on Saturday, but United lost that match 2-0. That result left them above the Premier League relegation zone only on goal difference.
