Detectives are investigating the killing of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu on Magadi Road in Nairobi.
DCI detectives have arrested a police constable suspected of shooting lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu after ballistic tests linked his issued pistol to the killing.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations identified the suspect as Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot.
Detectives arrested Cheruiyot after a year-long investigation into Mbobu’s killing.
The DCI says investigators recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot.
Forensic ballistic tests then established that the firearm had been used in the shooting.
The agency described the finding as a major breakthrough in the investigation.
Lawyer Mbobu Was Shot on Magadi Road
Mbobu died on September 9, 2025, after a gunman attacked him along Magadi Road in Nairobi.
According to the DCI, the lawyer was driving home from work when the attack happened.
Investigators have described the incident as a targeted shooting.
Specialist officers from the DCI Homicide Directorate have spent the past year reconstructing the circumstances surrounding the killing.
They have worked alongside forensic experts as they pursue evidence on the shooting.
Ballistics Provide Key Breakthrough
The recovery of Cheruiyot’s pistol has now given investigators a major forensic lead.
The DCI says ballistic examination connected the Ceska pistol to the firearm used to kill Mbobu.
The agency believes Cheruiyot may have acted as the gunman.
However, the allegations against him remain subject to the court process.
Cheruiyot remains in police custody as officers prepare him for arraignment.
Another Police Officer Remains at Large
Meanwhile, investigators have named Inspector Kenneth Sang as another suspect in the case.
The DCI alleges that Sang coordinated the operation in liaison with Rose Mbithe.
Sang remains at large as detectives continue searching for him.
Mbithe is already in police custody over the July 2026 killing of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The DCI says the investigation has established a link between Mbithe and the alleged operation involving Sang.
However, the agency has not publicly disclosed the alleged motive behind Mbobu’s killing.
DCI Vows to Pursue More Suspects
The latest arrests mark a major development nearly one year after Mbobu’s death.
The DCI says its investigation will continue as detectives pursue other people suspected of involvement.
The agency has also pledged to pursue suspects regardless of their rank or affiliation.
Cheruiyot’s arrest and the ballistic evidence will now form part of the evidence considered through the criminal justice process.
Meanwhile, detectives continue searching for Sang and investigating the wider circumstances surrounding the killing.
