Detectives link Evelyne Mukiri Mbaabu’s killing to a longstanding family land dispute as arrests rise to three.

Detectives have arrested two more suspects in the Meru murder investigation into the killing of 65-year-old Evelyne Mukiri Mbaabu. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) links the attack to a longstanding family land dispute.

The suspects are Godwin Kimathi, Mbaabu’s brother, and Beth Muthomi. Investigators accuse them of planning the killing and hiring Solomon Kathurima Kairemia to carry it out.

The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects in custody to three. Detectives arrested Kairemia on September 22, 2026.

Meanwhile, the DCI says investigators established that the suspects communicated before and after the murder. Detectives say those exchanges point to alleged planning and coordination.

Meru murder suspects await plea

The two newly arrested suspects have appeared in court. The court ordered them to remain in custody pending mental assessment, with plea-taking expected on November 4, 2026.

Mbaabu was preparing supper with her 13-year-old grandson when assailants entered her home and attacked her. The killing occurred in Kithoka Village, Meru County, on August 7, 2026, at about 7.20pm.

Investigators allege that Kimathi and Muthomi conspired to kill Mbaabu before recruiting Kairemia to execute the plan. Their alleged roles form part of the DCI’s investigation into the fatal attack.

Meanwhile, detectives continue to pursue additional leads in the case. The DCI says the investigation seeks to establish the full circumstances of the killing and identify everyone involved.
