The movement accuses authorities of political intimidation after police detained the Trans Nzoia deputy speaker in Kapenguria.

The Obed Mwale arrest has drawn condemnation from Linda Mwananchi, which wants the Trans Nzoia deputy speaker freed immediately. The movement accused authorities of using police to intimidate opponents of President William Ruto’s administration.

In a November 3, 2026 statement, communication head Pauline Njoroge described the detention as politically motivated. She also alleged a wider campaign of harassment against the movement’s leaders and supporters in Trans Nzoia.

Police arrested Mwale in Kitale and transferred him to Kapenguria Police Station in neighbouring West Pokot County. Njoroge said armed officers picked him up and that he remained in custody.

Mwale also represents Matisi Ward in the county assembly. He is a prospective Linda Mwananchi candidate for the Trans Nzoia Senate seat in the 2027 election.

Obed Mwale arrest linked to motorcade allegations

Police are reportedly investigating claims that Mwale financed criminal activities and mobilised gangs to disrupt political events. The allegations also include a plot to obstruct Ruto’s motorcade during his October 16 visit to Kitale.

However, Linda Mwananchi rejected the accusations, describing them as an attempt to silence Mwale. The movement portrayed him as a popular challenger to incumbent Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang.

Governor George Natembeya confirmed Mwale’s detention at Kapenguria Police Station ahead of an expected court appearance. He said the accusations included obstructing the president’s motorcade and sponsoring groups allegedly disrupting Kenya Kwanza rallies.

Meanwhile, supporters and members of Mwale’s legal team gathered at the station following his arrest. Volunteer lawyers associated with Linda Mwananchi were expected to represent him.

Political tensions deepen in Trans Nzoia

The detention comes amid a public political dispute between Natembeya and the national government. Other people working with the governor have also faced arrests or reported police attention.

On October 22, Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers arrested Amos Boaz Masika, a staff member in the governor’s office. Masika works as Natembeya’s official photographer, and officers detained him at Kitale Police Station.

Meanwhile, David Musundi, another member of the governor’s communications team, went into hiding after claiming detectives were seeking him.

The political dispute also extends to the KSh821 million Masinde Muliro Market project. Natembeya and the national government have disagreed over its ownership and implementation.

Despite the arrests, Linda Mwananchi said it would continue its political activities. Njoroge reaffirmed the movement’s opposition to Ruto as political groups prepare for the 2027 General Election.
