Cristiano Ronaldo is in contention for Portugal’s November Nations League squad.
Portugal have included Cristiano Ronaldo in their preliminary squad for November fixtures after his dispute with coach Jorge Jesus.
A Ronaldo Portugal return is possible after the forward made the preliminary squad for November’s Nations League fixtures. A Portuguese football federation (FPF) spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday that he remains in contention following his dispute with coach Jorge Jesus.
Portugal host Denmark on November 14 before travelling to Wales for a November 17 fixture. However, Ronaldo’s inclusion remains provisional, with Jesus due to name his final squad on November 6.
The 41-year-old left the national team camp abruptly on September 30 during the opening Nations League qualifiers. He later accused Jesus of failing to honour a promise about playing time.
Ronaldo Portugal return follows suspension
The FPF announced last week that it had imposed a 30-day suspension on Ronaldo for leaving camp. However, the federation backdated the punishment, allowing him to become available again by the end of this week.
Earlier in October, Ronaldo apologised to supporters and said he would accept any punishment. He also maintained that he had no intention of retiring from international football.
His preliminary selection therefore opens a path back into the squad, rather than confirming his place. The final announcement on November 6 will determine whether he joins Portugal for the two matches.
Playing-time dispute behind departure
In a social media post after leaving camp, Ronaldo outlined his grievances against Jesus. He alleged that the coach had promised him playing time against Norway but did not deliver.
Ronaldo also raised concerns about the coach’s remarks before a match against Denmark. He said Jesus had omitted several points at a press conference that the pair had agreed upon.
Portugal advance despite Ronaldo’s absence
Meanwhile, defending champions Portugal have won all four of their Nations League matches, including three without Ronaldo. Those results secured a quarter-final place with two games remaining.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner holds the men’s international records for both goals and appearances. He began his Portugal career in 2003, making his debut at the age of 18.
Although he has ruled out an immediate international retirement, Ronaldo has signalled that his career may soon end. He has said this will probably be his final year in football.
