A Rongai apartment fire sparked concerns over emergency preparedness on Tuesday morning as residents questioned firefighting response times. The blaze broke out at a five-storey building in Mbagathi Greens Estate, behind Maasai Mall in Kajiado County.
The fire started in the early hours, and flames remained visible at about 8.30am. Residents watched the building burn while questioning the time taken to mobilise firefighting services.
Residents question response to Rongai apartment fire
Videos shared on X showed flames spreading through sections of the apartment block, raising fears of extensive property damage. Meanwhile, residents expressed frustration over what they viewed as a slow emergency response.
One person recording from a neighbouring high-rise questioned whether emergency teams would arrive before the building suffered extensive damage. However, the available information did not establish when firefighters received an alert or reached the scene.
The cause of the blaze remained unknown at the time of reporting. The extent of the damage was also unclear, while no deaths or injuries had been reported.
Urban growth puts pressure on emergency services
Ongata Rongai lies about 17 kilometres south of Nairobi’s central business district and has experienced rapid urbanisation. Residential apartment blocks have increasingly replaced low-rise developments, adding pressure to public infrastructure and essential services.
Against that backdrop, residents have questioned whether firefighting resources and facilities can adequately serve the growing population. Their concerns extend to the availability of emergency services as housing developments expand.
Because Ongata Rongai lacks a local firefighting station, it relies on crews dispatched from elsewhere, including Nairobi. Engine availability and the distance to an incident can therefore affect response times.
