Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has reignited debate over Kenya’s 2022 presidential election, saying he still believes the late Raila Odinga won the poll.
Uhuru made the remarks on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, during a Jubilee Party National Executive Council meeting in Nairobi.
He also handed over Jubilee Party leadership to Fred Matiang’i, with the transition subject to the party’s formal processes.
Uhuru: “He Is the One Who Won”
While defending his support for Odinga’s 2022 presidential bid, Uhuru said:
“Na mimi mpaka wa leo najua ya kwamba yeye ndiye alishinda hiyo kura.”
He added:
“Tunajua vile mambo ilienda, na hatutaki iende hivyo tena.”
Uhuru was referring to the events surrounding the 2022 presidential election and his continued belief that Odinga won.
Uhuru Questions the 2022 Results
The former President also questioned how Azimio could secure significant numbers of parliamentary and gubernatorial seats while losing the presidency.
He argued that the political support behind Odinga’s coalition raised questions about the presidential outcome. However, these remarks represent Uhuru’s stated view, rather than a change to Kenya’s legally established election result.
What the Official Results Show
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared William Ruto the winner of the August 9, 2022 presidential election.
Ruto received 7,176,141 votes (50.49%), while Odinga received 6,942,930 votes (48.85%). The Supreme Court subsequently upheld the presidential election results.
Jubilee Leadership Changes Hands
Uhuru’s remarks came on the same day he handed over Jubilee Party leadership to Fred Matiang’i.
The transition follows the September 14, 2026 High Court ruling that upheld restrictions on retired presidents holding political party office beyond six months after leaving State House.
Uhuru will remain a Jubilee member and continue offering his counsel in an advisory capacity.
2027 Politics
The developments come as political parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. Matiang’i has emerged as a key figure within Jubilee and the wider opposition political space.
However, political nominations and alliances remain subject to the relevant party processes. Uhuru’s latest remarks have brought the 2022 election debate back into the spotlight.
At the same time, his Jubilee leadership handover marks a new chapter for the party as Kenya moves towards the 2027 General Election.
