Raila Odinga International Stadium will host the opening fixture announced by President William Ruto.
President William Ruto says the European clubs will play on January 5, 2027, to launch Nairobi’s new 60,000-seat stadium.
Bayern vs Ajax will headline the opening of Nairobi’s Raila Odinga International Stadium on January 5, 2027, President William Ruto has announced.
Ruto outlined the fixture in a recorded address from Russia, broadcast on Wednesday evening. He said the European clubs would launch the new 60,000-seat venue along Ngong Road.
The president presented the match as part of his commitment to deliver a stadium capable of hosting leading international teams. He also said the facility would help raise Kenya’s profile as a sporting destination.
Bayern vs Ajax set for stadium launch
The planned fixture would give Kenyan supporters a chance to watch two established European clubs play at home. Bayern Munich have a strong record in German football, alongside success in European competitions.
Meanwhile, Ajax Amsterdam are known for developing young players and their achievements in Dutch and European football. Their meeting in Nairobi is expected to draw interest from both local and international audiences.
The opening will also provide a significant test of Kenya’s ability to host high-profile international sporting events.
New venue includes VAR and goal-line technology
Construction of the stadium began in March 2024. According to Ruto, its features include a hybrid playing surface and 52 sky boxes.
The president also listed video assistant refereeing, known as VAR, and goal-line technology among the facility’s features.
Ruto said the stadium’s name honours former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his legacy. He described Odinga as a football enthusiast who enjoyed watching matches alongside ordinary supporters.
Corporate partnerships to support opening
Ruto said corporate partnerships would support the event. However, he did not name the sponsors or explain the financial arrangements for the fixture.
The announced match places two prominent clubs at the centre of the stadium’s launch. It also forms part of Kenya’s efforts to strengthen its standing as an international sports destination.
