President William Ruto has teased a major announcement concerning Nairobi’s Raila Odinga International Stadium, popularly known as Talanta Stadium.
The video featured the 60,000-seat facility, including its football pitch and stands fitted with seats in Kenya’s national colours.
The teaser has fuelled speculation that the government could announce the stadium’s official opening date. However, the government has not confirmed January 5, 2027, as the inauguration date.
European Clubs Linked to Possible Opening Match
Reports about a possible international friendly have also generated excitement among Kenyan football fans. Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Werder Bremen have featured in speculation about potential European visitors.
However, no official announcement has confirmed any of the clubs as opponents for the stadium’s opening match.

Inside the 60,000-Seater Stadium
Located at Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road in Nairobi, Talanta Stadium is being developed as a major venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The project is being overseen by the Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces, with China Road and Bridge Corporation involved in construction.
The stadium is designed to accommodate 60,000 spectators. Its features include modern seating, changing rooms, VIP facilities and broadcast infrastructure for international sporting events.
Plans for the wider Talanta Sports City complex also include commercial and hospitality facilities. Technical testing and operational preparations remain important steps towards full readiness.

Kenya will co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania. Talanta Stadium is expected to play a central role in the tournament.
